"Signifying", as the exhibition is called, aims to bring the richness, beauty and fragility of the Balearic Sea to the public through a dialogue between image and word.
Signifying is an exhibition open to multiple readings, as many as the number of people who visit it.
This exhibition is based on the different meanings of words to establish a game between the viewers and the winning images of the 2023 edition of MARE, and aims to contribute to the conservation of the Balearic Sea through humour, word games and dialogue between words and photography.
The opening ceremony of the MARE travelling exhibition was attended by Mar Vera and Ignacio Ramos, Head of Expansion and Sustainable Development and Head of Communication and Marketing at Alcudiamar respectively, Toni Ginard, Director of the Balearic Islands Port Authority, Juan Luis González, Deputy Mayor of Alcúdia Town Council, as well as Amador Garcias, Coordinator of MARE.
"The exhibition invites us to take another look at our environment", the organisers point out. After starting in Palma, the exhibition returns from Menorca to Mallorca. At the end of August it will travel to Formentera and Ibiza, thus completing its tour of all the Balearic Islands.
For the first time, the exhibition is coming to the north of Mallorca, thanks to the support of Alcudiamar, thus reinforcing its commitment to sustainability and respect for the environment, as well as that of the Balearic Islands Port Authority.
In addition to the exhibition, educational workshops related to marine photography were held in parallel during the exhibition. Children from the "Viu la Mar" educational programme organised by Wind Pirates, the sailing school located in Alcudiamar, took part in these workshops during the summer.
In the words of Alcudiamar's Mar Vera, "Alcudiamar is proud to be the first marina to host the 'Signify' exhibition of the MARE Contest, reaffirming our commitment to the conservation of the Balearic Sea and water quality, precisely one of the honourable mentions chosen for the last edition of the contest".
For Toni Ginard, Director of the Port Authority of the Balearic Islands, "although the men and women who work in the ports are land-based people, it is obvious that the sea is for us an essential part of our raison d'être, not only because of our work, but also because of the commitment that unites us. MARE is a great initiative because it transforms into a plastic expression that feeling which - as the Mediterranean people that we are - unites all those of us who seek to conserve such a precious asset as the marine environment".
Juan Luis González, Deputy Mayor of Alcúdia Town Council, added that he and the rest of the council are pleased to support initiatives such as those of MARE, which "through images aims to raise awareness of the need to promote the maintenance of the Mediterranean Sea and between all of us to become aware of the reality and conserve this common good".
The exhibition can be visited on Alcudia's Paseo Marítimo until 27 August.
